Netflix’s Four-Part Doc Series From Emmy Winner Rudy Valdez
“The Brooklyn Saints,” serves as more than an inner-city youth football league, but a family and vehicle for opportunity. This Netflix doc series was directed and executive produced by Rudy Valdez (Emmy-winning filmmaker behind HBO’s The Sentence) and captured using verité footage. We followed coaches, parents and the participants, boys aged 7-13 years old, around like a fly on wall in order to develop an authentic story. It will be released on Jan 29, 2021.
This was the most fulfilling job I’ve had (thus far) because it brought me home. I had an opportunity to meet the Brooklyn Saints during their competition in Orlando, Florida. I fell in love with the team and pretty much followed them back to NYC to continue being a part of the film crew. The best part was capturing these children’s innocence in the grittiest city.
The project was set up by Imagine Documentaries, the prolific non-fiction arm of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, in association with Amy Berg’s Disarming Films. Also produced by Giona Jefferson Sound Operator: Emily Strong Cinematographer: Julia Liu, Daniel Carter Camera Operator: Sam McCoy
